Author Guidelines

Follow these instructions to submitt your article

General information

1. The Brazilian Journal of Health Economics (J Bras Econ Saúde) is a publication for scientific content, with quarterly periodicity. It is aimed at researchers and health policy makers, managers and evaluators of the incorporation of health technologies. Its mission is to disseminate the knowledge produced by the Health Economy as a way to contribute to the reduction of negative impacts which may be associated with decision-making processes related to the incorporation of new technologies, treatments and medications. Accepted for evaluation are: disease cost studies, health economic analysis, budget impact analysis, observational study, pharmacoeconomic testing, epidemiological inquiry, health technology assessment, health policy formulation, planning and economic management of health services, methodological innovation and literature review, in the form of original articles, review articles, update articles and editorials (as detailed below). The articles can be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish or English. Authors interested in translating their article to English may request a translation quote to J Bras Econ Saúde. The Brazilian Journal of Health Economics does not receive subsidies financial institutions of any society, governmental institution or association. It is a private and independent initiative. The resources responsible for its maintenance come from the commercialization of editorial space for the publication of articles whose development has received financial support from private companies. Institutional sponsorship quotas are also sold. Article submissions are not subject to charge. The cost table for publication must be consulted with the Publisher.

2. Articles submitted to J Bras Econ Saúde must be unpublished, that is, they must not have been published nor submitted for review by other journals, in whole or in part. In cases of figures already published, authorization must be obtained and the source must be cited. Once published, the Copyright of the articles become property of Doctor Press Editora responsible for J Bras Econ Saúde.

3. The J Bras Econ Saúde Instructions for Authors incorporate the recommendations of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. The full text version is available at www.icmje.org. Manuscripts that do not comply with the instructions presented here will be returned for incorporation of adjustments prior to review by the Editorial Board.

4. Every article published in J Bras Econ Saúde undergoes peer review. Submitted articles are first forwarded to the editors for an initial assessment of scope of work and the editorial requirements of the Journal. If the evaluation is positive, the article is sent to two expert reviewers in the relevant field. The entire process is anonymous, that is, the reviewers are blind when the identity of the authors and their place of origin and vice versa. After reviewing the article, the articles can be accepted without modification, refused or returned to the authors with suggested modifications, and each article can be returned several times to the authors for clarification and modifications, without necessarily implying future acceptance of the work.

5. The number of authors of each manuscript is limited to eight. The concept of co-authorship implies contribution substantial in the design and planning of work, analysis and interpretation of data, and writing or reviewing criticism of the text. Significant contributions made to the study, but which do not meet these criteria, can be cited in the acknowledgments section. Authors' names must be fully described, the first being that of the main author. By submitting an article to the J Bras Econ evaluation process Health, the authors are fully responsible for the opinions and all the content contained therein.

6. By submitting their manuscripts to J Bras Econ Saúde, the authors assume full responsibility for the opinions and content described in your articles.

7. Clinical trials articles must be registered in one of the Clinical Trials Registry validated by the criteria established by the World Health Organization and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (eg www.actr.org.au, www.clinicaltrials.gov, www.ISRCTN.org, www.umin.ac.jp/ctr/index/htm and www.trialregister.nl). The study identification number must be presented at the end of the abstract.

8. For texts that are accepted for publication, a declaration, signed by all authors, must be sent to the journal, containing the following information: a) the manuscript is original; b) the manuscript does not it has not been published or submitted to another journal, nor will it be if it were published in J Bras Econ Saúde; ç) all authors actively participated in the preparation of the study and approved the final version of the text; d) situations of potential conflict of interest (financial or otherwise) are being reported; and) the study was approved by the ethics committee of the institution to which the work is linked (to articles reporting experimental research data; f) informed consent was obtained from patients included in the study (when applicable). Information about the approval of the study by the ethics committee and obtaining informed consent must also be included in the Methods section of the article.

9. Before the publication of accepted articles, the corresponding authors will receive, via e-mail, on file PDF, the article edited for approval. At this stage, corrections must be limited to typographical errors, without alteration of the study content. Authors must return approved proofs via e-mail or fax by 48 hours after receiving the message.

Types of published articles

• Original articles. Works resulting from scientific research that present original data on Health Economics and include descriptive statistical analysis and/or inferences from their own data. these articles have priority for publication. They must be composed of: cover page, abstract and keywords, abstract and keywords, text (divided into the sections Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion or equivalent, Conclusions), acknowledgments (if applicable), list of references (maximum 40), tables (if any), figure captions (if any) and figures (if any).
  
  
• Review articles. Papers aimed at summarizing, analyzing, evaluating or synthesizing research papers already published in scientific journals. They must include a synthesis and critical analysis of the literature surveyed and not be confused with update articles. They must be composed of: cover page, abstract and keywords, abstract and keywords, text, list of references, tables (if any), figure captions (if any) and figures (if any). Update or opinion articles. Papers that report generally current information on the subject of interest for certain specialties (eg a new modeling technique or method).
  
  

They have different characteristics from a review article, as they do not present a critical analysis of the literature. They must be composed of: cover page, abstract and keywords, abstract and keywords, text, list of references, tables (if any), figure captions (if any) and figures (if any). Letters to the reader. Letters to the editor commenting on, discussing or criticizing articles published in J Bras Econ Saúde will be well received and published as long as they are accepted by the Editorial Board. They must be composed of: title, author's name, identification of the publication being commented on and list of references (if any). A maximum of 500 words is recommended, including references. Whenever possible, an answer from the authors will be published along with the letter.

Preparation of originals Preferably use the Microsoft Word® word processor
. Works must be typed in font Times New Roman size 12, single spaced, left aligned, starting each section on a new page, in the following order: cover page, abstract and keywords, abstract and keywords, text, acknowledgments, list of references, tables, figure captions and figures. All pages must be numbered. Acronyms must be defined in full in the first occurrence in the text; after the first occurrence, only the acronym should be used. In summary, the use of acronyms should be avoided.

Substances must be presented using their generic name. If relevant, the trade name of the substance and the manufacturer can be informed in parentheses. The presentation of measurement units must follow the international system (SI). Animal genes must be presented in italics with a capital initial (example: Sox2); genes from human beings should also be presented in italics, but with all capital letters (example: SOX2). Proteins must follow the same capital/lowercase pattern, but without italics.

Cover Page

The cover page must contain:
- Concise and explanatory title, representing the content of the work, in Portuguese and English
- Short title (maximum 150 characters)
- Authors' names
- Authors' affiliation, indicating department/unit, institution and geographic region
- Name of the institution where the work was performed
- Information about aid received in the form of financing, equipment or medicines
- Congresses where the study was presented
- Name, address, telephone, fax and email of the corresponding author

Resume e abstract

All works must present an abstract in Portuguese and an abstract in English. Works written in Spanish must present, in addition to the abstract in the original language, also an abstract in Portuguese and an abstract in English. The content of the texts must be identical, and must not exceed 250 words. For original articles, the abstract should be structured as follows: Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusions. For case reports, review articles and update articles, the abstract should not be structured. The use of abbreviations in the abstract should be avoided, and references should not be cited.

Right after the abstract/abstract/resumen, three to six keywords that are members of the list of Descriptors in Health Sciences (http://decs.bvs.br).

This section is dedicated to recognizing the work of people who have collaborated intellectually but whose contribution does not justify co-authorship, or from people or institutions that have given material support.

References

In the text, citations will be identified in parentheses, by the author's last name followed by the year of Publication. Examples: one author (Steptoe, 1978), two authors (Edwards & Steptoe, 1980), more than two authors (Van Steirteghem et al., 1988).

The list of references must be presented in alphabetical order (last name of each author followed of the first two initials), and must not be numbered. Works by the same author must be sorted chronologically; works by the same author and year must be identified with letters after the year (2000a, 2000b, etc.). The presentation of the references will follow the models proposed in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (see examples below). All references cited in the list must be mentioned in the text and vice versa.

Tables and figures

Tables and figures (graphs, photographs, etc.) must be numbered in Arabic numerals according to the order in which they appear in the text and must have individual captions, presented at the end of the work. Each table and figure must be submitted on a separate sheet.

In tables, only horizontal lines must be used, and each data must be contained in a cell independent. Explanations about items in the tables must be presented in footnotes identified by the following symbols, in this sequence: *,†, ‡, §, ||,¶,**,††,‡‡.

Figures in general (graphs, photographs, etc.) will be published in black and white. Expenses with the eventual reproduction of photographs in color will be the responsibility of the author.

Figures can be submitted electronically, in .jpg, .gif or .tif extensions, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (to enable crisp printing), or by mail (see shipping instructions later). All figures sent by mail must be identified on the back using a sticky label containing the name of the first author, the figure number and an arrow indicating the side up.

Scanned photographs will not be accepted; paper photographs must be sent by mail. Photographs of patients must not allow identification.

Graphics should only be presented in two dimensions.

Figures already published and included in submitted articles must indicate the original source in the caption and must be accompanied by a permission letter from the rights holder (publisher or magazine).

Submission/submission of articles

Articles should preferably be submitted by email ([email protected]) or via the website: jbes.com.br. Text and pictures must be sent as an attachment to the message. Figures (exclusively graphics and photographs files) can be sent in .jpg, .gif or .tif extensions, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and maximum total size (of the set of figures) of 3 MB.
